Blood Bank

About the Department & Specialty:

Established : 2004

A Department that lends crucial support to every Speciality, the Blood Bank at SDM Medical College and Hospital is a transfusion medicine facility of international standards, offering high quality services to in-house patients as well as out of the hospital patients who are in urgent need of blood or its components.

It started off with whole blood preparation and as the hospital progressed with various specialties, the blood center also progressed to component separation in the year 2011 to meet the specific demands of patients.

In the year 2014, the tube method of blood grouping was replaced by a more advanced and sensitive method of blood grouping by gel card.

In 2016, Semi-automated ELISA was replaced by fully automated fourth generation ELISA with improved sensitivity to detect the TTDs.

In the year 2019, chemiluminescence was introduced for testing transfusion transmitted diseases which has a short window period and a very high sensitivity. It also has an added advantage of running a single sample at a time which is needed at times of SDP and emergencies as a better option than rapid card test.

Apheresis instrument was installed in the year 2021. Instrument facilitates plateletpheresis catering the patients with very low platelet counts.

The Blood Bank conducts post donation screening tests, Rh titre, Coombs test cold and warm antibodies, blood grouping and typing as well as hemoglobin tests for blood donors. Cross-matching tests are done by automated gel technology.

The team of trained and experienced Transfusion medicine experts, with the help of cutting-edge Technical support, provide safe and reliable services to patients through efficient screening of donors, collection of blood, separation components and storage at optimal conditions.
