About the Department & Specialty:

Established :

Department caters to the diagnostic needs of SDM hospital and other private hospitals of Hubballi-Dharwad region. Faculty members of the department are actively involved in diagnostic, teaching and research activities. Faculty are involved in teaching under graduates (Medical, Dental, Nursing, Physiotherapy, BSc Allied Sciences students), Post graduates and Ph.D. in Microbiology. Various research activities are routinely conducted by the faculty and they are published in National and international journals in the form of books and scientific articles. Department has conducted Conferences, CMEs and annual workshops. It conducted the Annual conference of Indian Association of Medical Microbiology- Karnataka chapter (IAMM-KC) in the year 2019.

Bacteriology

Services Available

Aerobic Bacterial Culture, Identification and Antibiotic Sensitivity testing for diagnosis of infectious diseases.

Facilities

The section is well equipped with various instruments such as Biosafety Cabinets, bacteriological incubators and materials required for aerobic bacterial culture and microscopy. Automated instruments like BacT Alert for automated Blood and Body fluid culture, VITEK-2 system for automated Antibiotic sensitivity testing are available.

Serology

Services Available

Apart from routine serological and infectious diseases tests using rapid methods for CRP, RA, C3, C4, ASLO, brucella, widal, Weil-Felix, RPR, HBV,HCV, HIV, Dengue, MCT, Chickunkungya, Leptospira, certain special immunological tests are also catered to such as ANA-IF test for diagnosis of Immunological and Rheumatoid disorders.

Mycology

Services Available

Culture and Identification of Fungal pathogens.

Facilities

Dedicated Biosafety Cabinet (Type II/A-II) and Two incubators for culture of dimorphic fungi, moulds and yeast.

Mycobacteriology

Services Available

Culture and Identification of Tuberculosis infection.

Facilities

Dedicated Biosafety Cabinet (Type II/A-II) and one incubator for culture of Mycobacteria.

Parasitology

Services Available

For identification of parasitic infections.

Facilities

This section is equipped with capillary centrifuge for Quantitative Buffy Coat (QBC) test for Malaria and other parasitic blood stream infections.

Molecular diagnostic laboratory (SDMMBL)

Services Available

Offers molecular diagnosis of infections such as CoVID-19 and Hepatitis C virus. Molecular testing is also done for various organisms such as Hepatitis B virus, Respiratory viruses (Influenza, RSV) Carbapenem gene detection, High risk Human papilloma virus (HPV), Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and NTM, Drug resistant gene detection in MTB etc.

Facilities

This laboratory is NABL accredited, BSL-2 laboratory equipped with dedicated Biosafety Cabinets (Type II/A-II) and Laminar airflows for the procedures such as sample processing to PCR reagent preparations. The lab is equipped with real time qPCR (open system) instrument by Applied Biosystem, ThermoFisher Scientifc, GeneXpert Dx instrument with IV modules and conventional PCR machines which is essentially used for Research purposes and designing in-house PCR.
