2 year old toddler gets back the amputated foot: The first of its kind in entire Karnataka & second in the World.

On a busy Thursday evening around 5.30pm, while Plastic Surgery Team were in a reconstructive procedure of head and neck cancer, one of the doctor in the team gets a call from Emergency department.

A 1 year 9 months old kid has accidently lost left mid foot and has arrived with amputated part. This incidence has occurred on 04.08.2022 at around 01.00 PM following road traffic accident. The kid and mother riding pillion on a 2 wheeler. Unfortunately the kid’s foot got stuck into the running wheel after slip of the motor bike.

They received primary treatment from Dr. Prakash Sankanur at Gadag and he preserved the foot in proper manner and referred to SDM Hospital.

Here at SDM Hospital, following the initial assessment, kid along with amputated foot was shifted to operation theatre within 20 minutes of time. The next 4 hours multi-disciplinary team comprising of Plastic surgeons, Orthopaedic surgeons and Anaesthesiologist re implanted the foot.

This critical surgery was led by senior Plastic Surgeon Dr. Niranjan Kumar along with Dr. Avinash Prabhu, Dr. Anil R. (Plastic Surgeons), Dr. Srinath K. M, Dr. Anmol (Orthopaedic Surgeons), Dr. Asif Kalas (Anaesthesiologist), Mr. Yuvraj and  support staff performed the surgery successfully.

Later addressing the media Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Medical Director & Senior Plastic Surgeon thanked Dr. Prakash Sankanur for his timely referral. Further he continued to say that any amputated part can be re implanted most of the times if brought in proper condition in proper time. He was happy to say that SDM team have successfully re- implanted 28 cases of amputated hand or finger till date.

This foot re-implant is unique, which is performed for the first time at SDM Hospital and the first of its kind in entire Karnataka & second in the World, considering the age and level of amputation.

Answering to the media, Dr. Niranjan Kumar suggested that the amputated part should be brought to the hospital as early as possible by washing the part in water, placing it in clean plastic bag which is kept in an ice box.
