The department of orthopedics was established in 2003. The department consists of 3 units and offers primary and complex trauma care. The department has also branched out into many orthopedic sub specialties and provides advanced orthopedic Surgical procedures like deformity correction, arthroplasty( joint replacement surgeries) , arthroscopy ( key hole procedures) , pediatrics orthopedics and geriatric orthopedic care.

The department is proud to possess experienced senior faculty who have been working for the last 2 decades and also  dynamic Associate and Assistant professors supported by young senior residents.

The faculty keep themselves updated regularly by participating in various courses & hands on workshops regularly. Many of the faculties have received training in the A.O. Course. On the clinical side, the department has progressed well with more than 20% increase in patient care statistics, both quantitatively & qualitatively every year and branching out and establishing many orthopedic subspecialties.

Department houses an orthopedic museum and skill lab to highlight the various evolution of orthopedic technological advances from the beginning. The skill lab is set up for the benefit of both undergraduate and postgraduate students to hone their skills by practicing on bone models.

The department is actively involved in conducting a structured teaching schedule for undergraduate (MBBS, BPT) and postgraduate students (MS (ORTHO) and MPT) students of SDM College Of Medical Sciences and SDM College Of Physiotherapy.

Head of the Department

Dr. Santosh S. Jeevannavar, MBBS, D. Ortho, DNB (Ortho), He has completed his MBBS & D-Ortho from Shri B. M. Patil Medical College, Bijapur, Karnataka and DNB-Ortho from Hardikar Hospital, Pune. He has Completed Joint Replacement & Arthroscopy Fellowship course of 1 year in Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune under Dr. Hemanth Wakankar  sponsored by ZIMMER and OTA USA  . He also has worked closely with renowned surgeons Dr. Sachin Tapasvi, Dr. Ashish Babhulkar, Dr S Prakash, Dr. S M Hardikar  and Dr. Sunil Nadkarni.  He is dynamic and actively involved in management of complex orthopedic injuries and polytrauma, sports injuries including arthroscopy and arthroplasty. His passion in teaching and sharing his knowledge and experiences engaged him in various PG and UG teaching programs. His zeel for research is reflected in various peer reviewed publications in numerous journals. He is reviewer for various international peer reviewed journals and has presented many papers in various international and national conferences which have won medals.

Teaching Program

The department is involved in regular teaching programs for MBBS, Physiotherapy and Postgraduate students. Department has 6 post graduate seats and 2 Trauma Fellowship seats and 1 Arthroplasty fellowship seats. PG students are involved in OPD patient’s evaluation, in patients work up and assisting operations. There is a well-structured teaching program both in the classroom and at the skill lab. The department possesses a well-equipped skill lab where the students are given hands-on training in orthopedic procedures. Every Saturday a clinical meet and trauma audit meetings are held for periodic evaluation of work, which is also attended by local orthopedic surgeons.
Certified fellowship courses
  1. Trauma fellowship of one year is being run under Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University providing quality exposure and training for young orthopedic surgeons with an annual intake of 2 fellows.
  2. Arthroplasty fellowship is also offered for one year with an annual intake of 1 fellow.

The department is actively involved in teaching and encourages many academic initiatives not only to undergraduates and postgraduates but also hosts a weekly clinical meeting for Hubli Dharwad orthopedic surgeons which has been running  since the last 18 years regularly on Saturday morning .To encourage better learning and exposure to post graduates a monthly clinical meet is held on rotation basis in association with Hubli – Dharwad orthopedic association where post graduates from nearby institutes like KIMS Hubli, Civil hospital Dharwad and KLE hospital Hubli interact and present interesting clinical cases monitored by senior staff .

The department in active association with IMA Dharwad and local ROTARY clubs regularly participates in preventive orthopedic camps and health checkup camps providing quality health care to nearby needy patients and fulfills its social obligations   

The department apart from routine orthopedic work also provides specialty care like polytrauma management, joint replacement surgery, spine surgeries, deformity correction surgeries and shoulder, knee and ankle arthroscopy. The physiotherapy department and ALC centers provides excellent support for post-operative rehabilitation services. The department has also conducted many conferences & CME’s. Regular visits by overseas consultants are held regularly for the benefit of staff and post graduates. 

Regular publications in peer review journals are published by all faculty and post graduates and also senior faculty have contributed chapters in well renowned textbooks. Paper presentations in various state, national and international conferences are done every year. Department of orthopedics along with plastic surgery won the second prize in national science day conducted by SDM University in Feb 2022.To encourage quality and competitiveness among postgraduates a “Gold medal” is sponsored for the best outgoing postgraduate every year, which is awarded during the convocation.
