General Surgery
The Department of Surgery is one of the largest departments in the hospital and provides surgical care and teaching. The department has five units and provides high quality, affordable, surgical care in outpatient, inpatient, and emergency surgical settings. Besides patient care, the department trains undergraduate and postgraduate students in Surgery. The department began providing services in 2004 and was earlier headed by Dr. M. Manivachagan MS (October 2004 to May 2006) Dr. Mukund M. Battal MS (July 2006 to July 2009) and Dr. Mallikarjun Desai MS (July 2009 to March 2020).
Head of the Department
Dr. B. Srinivas Pai is the Head of the Department of Surgery. Dr. B Srinivas Pai completed his MBBS and MS from KMC (Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal). Dr. B Srinivas Pai has worked at Kidwai Institute of Oncology and in the Department of Surgical Oncology at Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Hospital, KMC, Manipal, and also as a Unit Head in the Department of General Surgery at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Dr. B Srinivas Pai joined SDM College of Medical Sciences in the year 2010 as a Unit Chief and from 5th March 2020 as Head of the Department. Dr. B Srinivas Pai has 25 years and 6 months of experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in Surgery.
Teaching Program
Undergraduate students undergo clinical training in surgery from the II year onwards. Daily clinical teaching is done in the hospital wards. Theory classes are conducted in the college lecture halls on all days. Interns are posted for training in Surgery for two months. They are trained in basic surgical care and assisting during operations. The department also conducts weekly seminars and surgical skills training for the interns. Postgraduate surgical trainees pursuing a Master of Surgery (MS) course undergo three years of training in the department. Postgraduate clinics and subject seminars are conducted weekly. Inter-departmental discussions, management-oriented discussions in surgery, and grand rounds are conducted once a month. In addition, the department conducts morbidity and mortality meetings once a month. The department conducts theory teaching for Bachelor of Dental Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing and BSc OT Technician Courses. Oral Maxillofacial Postgraduate students are posted in our department for a period of one month. The Department also trains the students from abroad under the GEMX program.
