Anatomy
The department of Anatomy was established in the year 2004 with Dr. Badagandi at the helm of affairs as Professor & Head of the department. Department has grown over a period of time under committed different HODs & faculty members. Currently Dr. Veena V. Kulkarni Professor assumes a chair as head of the department & leads the different programs from front. Anatomy teaching focuses primarily on the morphology, topography and neurovascularity of bodily structures and their clinical application, thus the department has a long-standing tradition of excellence and innovation in medical education.
The Section of Anatomy is steadfast to deliver excellent and innovative teaching practices across multiple undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It caters to the need of MBBS, BDS, BPT, Nursing & allied health courses. The dedicated teaching faculty imparts the skill of dissection, cadaveric surgical approach to the medical & dentistry students. The teachers work in concord to bring about an excellent teaching environment at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Teaching Program
Anatomy teaching is augmented with multiple teaching resources to facilitate the experimental learning. Department has a cadaveric bank, collection of dry, wet human specimens, mummified and plastinated specimens. In addition to sectional anatomy wing & radiographic images, we integrate the world-leading technology in our teaching sessions, including anatomage tables, where students use digital 3D models to gain a greater understanding of the relationships of the human body. We also have a library of plastic models that students can use in study periods. Department is equipped with a distinctive museum having a multitude of mounted wet specimens along with plaster & fiber glass 3D models which are prepared in-house by skilled artists under the supervision of the faculty. An image gallery is present in the museum where radiographs, CT and MRI images are displayed. The department conducts live ultrasonographic demonstration classes in association with the department of radiodiagnosis, so that students are exposed to imaging anatomy right from the start of their medical education.
The departmental library has a collection of the latest editions of books and journals. Research interests across the department are diverse, and include basic fundamental, clinical, radiological, living anatomy, in addition to medical education. Department is running Ph.D. program from academic year 2023. Our department’s active teaching faculty are members of numerous learned societies like Anatomical society of India, Society of Clinical Anatomists, Karnataka chapter of anatomists. Department observes every year October 15 as World Anatomy Day In memory of Andreus Vesalius and conducts many co-curricular activities to the students of SDM university, which brings out creativity, healthy competition in learning Anatomy best among the students.
In addition to our teaching commitments, we have delivered the training program and workshops in many fields including clinical anatomy, Surgical anatomy and Cadaveric hands-on workshops. We shouldered our social responsibility by conducting exhibitions to the school children & it was pivotal in generating interest in medical education in young minds. The departmental library has a collection of the latest editions of books and journals.

Department proudly & effectively runs the voluntary body, organ donation, program since from inception it reached to the community through All India radio program & awareness programs at social gatherings. Our teaching faculty have authored , contributed chapters to the popular Anatomical textbooks and are reviewers for various Anatomical journals, to name few.
